Regular Workshops in Edinburgh

Please note: Due to COVID-19, Gordon’s monthly flute and whistle workshops are currently on hold. A list of other teachers in Scotland is in the Resources section.

FluteFling monthly workshops provide traditional flute and whistle players with inspiration, ideas and support to further develop their music.

Led by Gordon and occasional guest tutors in Edinburgh in a relaxed setting, come along to learn and develop traditional techniques while building up a repertoire from Scotland, Ireland and beyond. Numbers are strictly limited. Please see below to find out more about the formats and suitability.

Suitability

FluteFling workshops aim to support your music and playing technique and promote confidence in playing traditional music on flutes and whistles. To get an idea of what we might cover, check out the blog archive and the Resources section.

The workshops are suitable for adults already playing tin whistles and low whistles in D or wooden simple system (Irish) and modern classical (Boehm) flutes. Unfortunately these workshops aren’t intended for absolute beginners, but musicians building up experience or returning to the instrument after a break are most welcome. If in doubt, please contact Gordon.

Under 18s

Please note that this workshop is intended for adults. However, those under 18 may be considered by arrangement. Please contact Gordon if considering this.

Format

The main focus for the workshops will be on developing technique while exploring traditional tunes, which can change as points of interest arise. These usually include:

  • Building up a repertoire from a flute and whistle perspective.
  • Aspects of ornamentation, breathing and other technical challenges are covered.
  • Teaching is by ear, but sheet music and recordings are provided. Support for different experience levels will be accommodated within the workshop.

Gordon has been running traditional flute and whistle classes and workshops in Edinburgh for over 20 years, drawing on his extensive experience as a teacher and as a musician performing at ceilidhs, festivals and sessions in Scotland, Ireland and across Europe.
