Saturday workshops

The Saturday workshops feature Claire Mann, Rebecca Knorr and Munro Gauld and We hope to see you there for another weekend of great music, workshops, sessions and performances. Oh yes — and not forgetting the food and socialising!

Claire Mann (Moffet), Rebecca Knorr (Edinburgh) and Munro Gauld (Perthshire) will be taking the workshops.

Claire Mann returns after her appearance last year as our special guest speaker. Originally from Newcastle-on-Tyne, now resident in the Scottish Borders, Claire plays flute, whistle, fiddle and also sings. She has been a fixture on the Scottish music scene for many years, has recorded and performed solo as well as in partnership with many others, from Old Blind Dogs to the Nuala Kennedy Band and in Tabache, a duo with fiddler Aiden O’Rourke. Present projects include performing with award-winning accompanist and singer Aaron Jones. Claire will be in conversation about her work and performing on flute and whistle.

We are delighted that Rebecca Knorr is able to join us this year. Rebecca has been teaching flute and whistle for over 30 years to children and adults individually and in groups. She began playing traditional music in the early 80s and is respected both as a fine player and a composer of traditional music. She is a founding member of the band Calluna, which focused on interpretations of both old and new Scottish music.

Munro is a Perthshire flute and whistle player who has been playing traditional music for over 30 years in ceilidh bands, sessions and gigs.

He is particularly interested in exploring the technical intricacies and requirements of playing Strathspeys, pipe marches and other Scottish music on flute. And, by drawing on the rich Perthshire musical and folklore traditions of the 17th-19th centuries, putting tunes in their historical context of time, place, people and historical events. A thoughtful musician, he likes to dig deep into the music, some of which he has recorded.

Further details will appear on this page as they become available.

Workshop format and FAQs

This will be updated soon, but we will largely follow the popular format of previous years. To see what we got up to last year and whether it is suitable for you, take a look at last year’s page. If you have any queries, get in touch and we will do what we can to help.

Venue: This year we will return to Bellfield in Portobello, for flutes and whistles by the sea.

The change is due to availability, but Portobello is just a 26 bus ride away from Waverley Station, has free parking and good road links for those traveling by car.

With good cafes, bars and restaurants, art galleries and nearby beach, it’s an attractive location and base for the weekend. There is also a good range of hotels, guest houses and Air BnB.

Address: Bellfield, 16B Bellfield Street, Portobello, EH15 2BP

The 6th FluteFling Edinburgh Weekend is supported by Tasgadh funding.

The Cathal McConnell Trio in concert

Cathal McConnell (flute, whistles, song) Karen Marshalsay (Scottish harp) Kathryn Nicoll (fiddle, viola) in an acoustic concert.

Tickets £10/ £12 available via Brown Paper Tickets: Book Cathal McConnell Trio tickets now.

Cathal McConnell is one of traditional music’s true legends. As a founder of Boys of the Lough he has taken Irish music round the world, touring the US countless times and entertaining audiences with his sweetly sung ballads, his lightly worn tin whistle and flute virtuosity and his inimitable drolleries.

A one-man carrying stream of tradition, McConnell has music and song in his blood and he is particularly in his element when accompanied by his superbly talented friends, fiddler and violist Kathryn Nicoll and harper Karen Marshalsay, delivering the ‘pure drop’ and roguish charm that won him a Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015.

An evening with Cathal McConnell in any situation is time well spent and this evening with the Cathal McConnell Trio is sure to be musically enriching, hugely rewarding and a whole lot of fun.

The concert rounds off a day of flute and whistle workshops as part of FluteFling’s 6th  Annual Edinburgh Weekend. Please note that the concert will last approximately 75 minutes and there will be no interval.

Good news! 🙂 In response to the interest in this, and as it is an early evening event, we have decided to make it easier for parents.

Children under 10 go free when accompanied by an adult.

Unfortunately a bar will no longer be available. However, drink is allowed, so feel free to bring your own. 🙂
