About

FluteFling traditional flute and whistle workshops take place in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The Covid pandemic has impacted how and when these take place and the organisers are monitoring the situation continually.

FluteFling is an informal unincorporated not for profit community cultural organisation run on a volunteer basis that seeks to promote interest, education and participation in playing traditional music on the flute and whistle families of instruments in Scottish contexts, including an awareness and understanding of its history.

The Scottish Flute Weekends in Edinburgh and Aberdeen are jointly run by Kenny Hadden, Sharon Newton Creasey and Gordon Turnbull.

A prominent figure on the Scottish music scene, Kenny is well-known in Aberdeen as a tutor with Scottish Culture and traditions (SC&T) and as a performer. In 2018 Kenny was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame Services to Community.

Sharon is well known as a performer, teacher and researcher. One of the foremost exponents of the Boehm flute in traditional Irish and Scottish music, she is an expert on the music of County Fermanagh.

Gordon is the lead co-ordinator and main point of contact for FluteFling, and writes and maintains the website. He has been teaching music in Edinburgh since 1996 and runs the monthly afternoon workshops in Edinburgh. He previously ran classes for the Scots Music Group and workshops for The Border Gatherin’ and Fèis Fhoirt. FluteFling evolved out of The Flow, Gordon’s website on Irish flute and whistle playing. Gordon is an associate tutor with the University of the Highlands and Islands and has been published in the British Flute Society’s journal FLUTE and in Music Education UK.

The FluteFling Scottish traditional flute and whistle weekends have been taking place since 2014 and are gratefully supported and advised by many people, particularly John Crawford, Pete Saunders and Tom Oakes.
