FluteFling Online December 2020

The 1st FluteFling Online Workshops will take place 12 and 19 December 2020

FluteFling are delighted to announce a workshop mini series with Claire Mann. As we head into Midwinter, make some space and time for you and your music as Claire guides you through ideas to develop your technique and repertoire.

Delivered over Zoom from her house near Newton Stewart in SW Scotland, the online workshops will take place over two consecutive weekends with a morning and afternoon part each day. There is an additional opportunity to be part of a group video performance based on material featured in the workshops.

As a mini-series, this provides an opportunity for some directed focus on your music for a couple of weekends and if you add in getting the music a week in advance, there’s three weekends on your own musical development.

This could extend to four or five weeks when you add in the additional opportunity to participate in a group video performance based on material from the workshops. Videos can be submitted over the holiday period and will be compiled and edited for the end of January.

Claire will teach by ear but sheet music will be provided and a recording available in advance. The workshops are suitable for non-beginners who play:

  • Simple system wooden flutes (keyed and unkeyed, in D)
  • Boehm system flutes
  • Whistles in D
  • Low whistles in D

Workshop schedule (all times GMT)

Note: for those in different timezones or unable to make the scheduled workshop times for any reason, the workshops will be recorded and made available to all ticket holders in a secure archive until January 09 2021. It will give all participants the option of revisiting the teaching and enhancing the learning as often as you like for that period. The videos will be removed from the archive after that date. We believe that this is a secure and practical way for everyone to get the most out of the experience.

Data protection: The privacy of attendees will be respected and the recordings will focus on Claire, who will have her own camera. A co-host will also be on hand. Purchasing a ticket gives your consent to participate in these recorded events.

About Claire Mann

Claire Mann has previously been a popular special guest speaker and tutor for FluteFling. She has won several all-Ireland championships on flute and whistle, plays fiddle and also sings. Originally from Newcastle-on-Tyne and now resident in SW Scotland, she has been a fixture on the Scottish music scene for many years, has recorded and performed solo as well as in partnership with many others, from Old Blind Dogs to the Nuala Kennedy Band and in Tabache, a duo with fiddler Aiden O’Rourke. Present projects include performing with award-winning accompanist and singer Aaron Jones.

Visit Claire’s website for further information on her career and recordings.

“Mann’s fabulously fluent flute is the dominant melody instrument here (well, she is an all-Ireland champion) but she’s very potent on the fiddle too.”
Norman Chalmers, Scotland on Sunday
